INSULIN PUMPS & CGM'S
Diabetes technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose
monitors help people with diabetes improve their blood sugar time in range, which helps to
reduce the risk of complications. A Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES)
can provide education about technology options available, and can also help train you and help
troubleshoot problems. Information about insurance coverage and how to work with your
physician to get started is also provided.

PRE-DIABETES
Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than
normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. One in three Americans
have pre-diabetes, but only about 14% are aware. Working with a dietitian improves health
outcomes in pre-diabetes, and slows its progression to Type 2 diabetes. A dietitian will help you
make diet and lifestyle changes through goal setting, and will teach you how to modify your
eating pattern, set a weight loss goal if needed, and will discuss exercise and physical activity.

PCOS
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome affects approximately 10% of women in the US, and since insulin resistance is a key component, it is seen as an endocrine disorder. Lifestyle modification including a healthy eating pattern and exercise is the preferred method to treat PCOS, and can
partner with medications if prescribed. A dietitian can show you how to make small changes in
your eating habits to improve insulin resistance and help you to meet your weight and health
goals.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Some people want to work on weight loss due to health concerns such as
high blood pressure, joint problems, or glucose intolerance. Others just want to look and feel
their best. Whatever the reason for wanting to lose weight, working with a dietitian will teach
you sustainable skills that will help you incorporate a healthy eating pattern into your life,
wherever you go. Restrictive diets don’t work, but learning how to enjoy your favorite foods
while adding in nutrient dense foods, and making small healthy swaps does.

DIABETES IN ADULTS AND CHILDREN
Medical nutrition therapy has been shown to significantly
improve blood glucose control. The meal planning guidelines from the American Diabetes
Association emphasize a customized meal plan based on your age, health concerns, lifestyle, and
more. There is no “diabetic diet”, or “foods to avoid” list. All foods can be worked into a meal
plan for diabetes, and a dietitian can teach you how to plan meals to improve your blood sugar
and overall health. Yes, you can enjoy your favorite foods!

HEALTHY EATING FOR FAMILIES
Grocery shopping and cooking for a healthy family can be a
challenge. Work schedules, sports programs, community activities, and more create mealtime
challenges, often leading to grab and go type meals. A dietitian can provide ideas on easy ways
to incorporate healthy foods into your busy schedule, and will provide quick and easy meal and
snack ideas for family members of all ages.

EATING FOR HEART HEALTH
Making changes in your eating pattern can help improve many
cardiovascular measures. Whether you have been diagnosed with a cardiovascular problem or
want to lower your risk due to a family history of heart disease, a dietitian can work with you on
an approach that will take into account your lifestyle and food preferences.

"I can be resistant to change sometimes, wanting to eat what I want to eat, so it was a big step to start with Melissa. She allowed me to take the steps I was comfortable with, then she listened, she encouraged, and she repeated so many good nuggets. The first step to good health is beginning and then the next step is having someone, like Melissa, come alongside you, who will be patient and provide the information you need to meet your goal. Thanks!"
"Melissa has helped identify the things in my diet that kept the scale from moving in the right
direction. After just a few conversations, she’d said “it’s those sneaky fats”.
After only a few short weeks of working with her learning what a balance plate looks like, I’m
finally moving in the right direction and not feeling like I’m on a strict diet. She has provided
me with resources for new recipes and helped me feel excited about cooking new things."
"I am a Registered Dietitian and have recently been accepting insurance in my private practice. I found Melissa through a dietitian group and she has been an invaluable resource and mentor for me while trying to grow my insurance-based practice. We barely knew each other and she was so willing to jump on the phone and help me get started and answer all of my questions. She is patient, quick to respond, and incredibly knowledgeable and I am beyond thankful for her support!!"
